Metric is the default, right? I don't think I ever bothered to change it. They got me.
Re: It's Videogames
If I remember correctly, it does start off in metric unless you change it

Re: It's Videogames
ive been replaying elden ring because, well i felt like it and i hadnt played the ps5 version before so i had an excuse to start over.
im not great at the game, but am...servicable? anyways, i was really impressed on this play through how smooth the difficulty curve is when you arent dying all the time and losing your runes. ive basically been cruising through the game, beating bosses first try i found ridiculously difficult in the past, and only having to repeat bosses im having trouble with a few times. i finally hit a wall at maliketh, though. godskin duo went down first try, relatively easily, so i thought i was leveled properly for the area. im not sure i can beat maliketh at lvl 10X at my skill level. i think he marks "the difficulty spike." maybe ive not been exploring enough because i felt i was in the home stretch.

He's quite the monster. The way he moves is so well done, it's like you just want to watch him
This is a spoiler on fighting him, do not click on it unless you literally want a spoiler

It's funny what's hard in the game and what isn't. "Radhan is so hard!" Literally first try. "Dragon knight isn't even a boss, he's just a miniboss!" Took me like 30 tries

Re: It's Videogames
Oh, that reminds me, I wanted to ask you guys this.
Scenario One:
You play Elden Ring. You get to some boss. Let's say it's Horah Loux. It takes you (me) 30 tries to beat him. Each try takes like 5 full minutes, because he has two phases. That's two and a half hours! Each attempt you are killed, you run back, you fight him again. You finally beat him after two and a half hours. That was hard, right
Scenario Two:
You play Snowrunner. You decide, hey I'm going to do Amur's regional objectives. The objective involves restoring an entire rocket base, the power facility (elsewhere) that powers it, bringing the trailer for the rocket out of grueling wilderness. transporting the rocket across two maps, so on and so forth. If you mess up and roll a truck, you can either teleport back to base with it and try again -or- you can bring up another truck to right the first one. You don't die in this game, and you almost never truly have to do something again. Anyway, epic mission series, you beat Amur. Let's say it takes you 30 hours. That was hard, right
Which thing is ~difficulty~ and which isn't. Is difficulty trying for two and a half hours to kill this one insane boss, who kills you over and over until you finally succeed after 30 tries? Is difficulty a 30-hour mission series with no real chance of failure, but you did have to figure out how you were going to do it along the way? Which one is "harder"
Are neither of them "difficult" if you victory was inevitable either way

Re: It's Videogames
ive found dragon knight when i can ride my horse is just a difficult mob. dragon knight when i cannot ride my horse is basically impossible and i will run by it every time i can.
horse really makes a lot of the "difficult" bosses pretty easy. i never got any of the complaints about fire giant.

Re: It's Videogames
Yeah I saw a streamer taking like 40 tries to kill Radhan. He was not on his horse. This one seems especially egregious, because I swear it seems to me that Radhan is on a horse deliberately so that you know you should also be on a horseseathesee wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 10:38 pmive found dragon knight when i can ride my horse is just a difficult mob. dragon knight when i cannot ride my horse is basically impossible and i will run by it every time i can.

Re: It's Videogames
the hardest boss for me was the demi-human chiefs because i tried to fight them very early as deprived
Re: It's Videogames
To me, difficulty is overcoming frustration with effort. Both those experiences sound difficult!Doug wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 10:22 pm Oh, that reminds me, I wanted to ask you guys this.

I try to play games on Ironman whenever possible, because I enjoy high stakes, the risk of failure makes the game more exciting for me. But difficulty doesn't require that risk. Solving a jigsaw puzzle can be difficult, even though there's no way to fail it and every valid move is forward progress.

what the hell did they do to minecraft

mods are great and all but i guess you do actually have to have a basic understanding of what is and isn't worth playing

Re: It's Videogames
supposedly it's mega popular, somehow
Re: It's Videogames
I like having crazy stuff to look forward to even if I never got it. I quit Terraria Calamity before finishing, for some games it's nice to quit because you got your fill of it instead of quitting because you ran out of stuff to do.
Re: It's Videogames
when i quit because i ran out of stuff to do the game lives very fondly in my memory
Re: It's Videogames
wtf this looks sweet as hell? It's one of those single-person passion projects by a crazy driven dev, and it looks like it might just end up amazing, as those sometimes do!
(still in early access, but looks like there's already a lot to love imo)

Re: It's Videogames
this seems WAY too high fidelity to not be wasting a shitload of (solo!) devtime on graphical stuff, but at least if there's a genre that calls for graphical fidelity it's maybe space games

Probably not. If you win you get a Strength Sphere and a slight cosmetic change to a cutscene.Doug wrote:lol yeah
